1.
Eastward 04:17
As the dark drains from the sky A flintlock stare is in your eye Crystal-hard and pistol-bright In the embers of the night You turn a little eastward In this light you have no name Just steady nerves and ready aim Pistol-bright and crystal-hard On your feet and on your guard You tiptoe from the bedroom Steal away with steely heart Leave before the songbirds start Take your bag from off the shelf Close the door and ask yourself: Am I feeling lucky?
2.
The steeper the slope The harder the climb The closer together We’re drawn It’s a question of hope It’s a question of time It’s a question of whether We go on Running rings around each other In and upwards to the peak Pushing through the clouds that cover Mountains playing hide and seek You and I are elevated Inked into the same design I will be your contour line If you’ll be mine Come peak or come trough Up over the fold We’re off to discover How it feels Ignoring ways off Ignoring the cold Ignoring the blisters On our heels We go on and on and on Running rings around each other... If you’ll be mine I will be your contour line
3.
I met an old man who’d flown aeroplanes for forty years I said: all that sitting still in a tiny little cabin – Weren’t you bored to tears? He said, ‘No, son, Every day was heaven, There was always blue above the clouds.’ Now everything changes when I think of what the old man said Instead of running round all day like an ant inside a burrow I stop and I clear my head And I look down From a pilot’s eye view In the open blue above the clouds So any time you feel like you’re drifting in a world of grey With no star for you to steer by, just remember I am nearby I hope you can hear me say That tomorrow Is a day born brand new And it’s always blue above the clouds
4.
Semiprecious 04:07
I’ll bring you amber The colour of maybe The colour of taking it slow And though I’m the sap With his heart in a trap The harder ones don’t let it show Hiding the strings of my attachment These are the terms of our endearment Shop-worn words, empty gestures They’re the wrong shape and the wrong size But I could be semiprecious In your eyes Opal and serpentine Each time we intertwine I get tied up into knots Onyx and amethyst Your amateur dramatist Stuck on the simplest of plots Paying the price of your amusement These are the terms of our endearment Shop-worn words...
5.
Like Spirits 03:50
Sinking and rising Like spirits, like weather It’s the first drink each evening that tastes of her absence And later she comes in a dream, in the distance But on waking nobody is there Painting and counting Each colour, each hour Till the last pink of sundown has fled the horizon And that lucky old sun just keeps sinking and rising Over and over Over the yard-arm Over the hill’s furrowed brow Evenings are ever so quiet now...

about

Edward Randell’s debut EP Mapmaker introduces a distinctive new voice in UK songwriting. South Londoner Randell, best known as a member of Grammy-winning vocal group The Swingles, collaborated with producer Hannes Plattmeier on his first solo release to craft a richly textured set of five songs that chart an emotional course from sunrise to sunset. Their sweeping melodies and sparkling lyrics recall the classic craft of Burt Bacharach as well as the neon melancholy of The Blue Nile or Prefab Sprout.

about

Edward Randell London, UK

Edward Randell is a singer and songwriter from south London. With a warm blanket of a voice, slyly sparkling lyrics and melodies that evoke instant nostalgia, his music sounds like James Taylor and Rufus Wainwright sharing a pot of English Breakfast.

Formerly a member of legendary vocal group The Swingles, Edward is due to release his full-length debut in 2024, co-produced with Chris Hyson.
